Sacred Heart Hosts Stonehill in NEC Opener

The Pioneers will open conference play in the Pitt Center against the newest NEC member, Stonehill

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will host Stonehill in the Pitt Center on Thursday, December 29th at 2:00 PM in the Northeast Conference opener. The Pioneers are 6-8 on the season, and the Skyhawks, the newest member of the NEC, are 4-10 overall this season.

OPENING TIP:
  • This is the first Division I meeting between Sacred Heart and Stonehill and is the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. The Skyhawks are in their first year in the NEC at the Division I level. The two programs have met during their Division II days, dating back to the 1966-67 season.
  • The Pioneers are playing their second consecutive home game, most recently, a 66-62 home victory over Holy Cross last Thursday. Three Pioneers scored 12 points each, Nico Galette, Raheem Solomon, and Mike Sixsmith, to lead SHU in the win.
  • Stonehill has lost its last four games in a row.
  • Galette has scored in double figures in every game this season as he leads the team with 15.4 points per game. Solomon (13.1), senior Joey Reilly (10.4), and junior Aidan Carpenter (11.3) are all averaging double figures for the Pioneers.
  • Junior Bryce Johnson has three double-doubles this season, and Galette has two. Johnson leads the team in rebounds, 6.0 per game, and Galette is second with 4.6.
  • Graduate student Brendan McGuire made his return for the Pioneers after being out since November 13th. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina is in his 10th season as the head coach of Sacred Heart.
  • Galette was named to the All-NEC preseason team.
  • Sacred Heart was tabbed second in the NEC preseason poll.
