SHU Game Notes

The two teams tied atop the Atlantic Hockey Standings with 20 points play each other twice this week at Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester. Sacred Heart (6-2-1, 6-1-1 AH), coming off a five-point road weekend, is on the bus again this week heading to RIT (8-2, 7-1 AH). The Friday and Saturday puck drops air live on FloSports TV at 7 and 5 p.m.

SERIES
The Tigers own a 27-15-2 advantage in a matchup that began with a 4-2 RIT win on 11.24.04. The Tigers ended SHU's 2021-22 season by winning two of three in the conference quarterfinals at Rochester last March. The middle contest was a 3-1 Pioneer win.

PIONEERS
Sacred Heart, which received 16 votes in this week's uscho.com national poll, got goals from seven different players on the way to a 6-3 win and a 3-3 OT tie (2-1 shootout win) against Mercyhurst last weekend at Erie. The Pios, who converted three of five advantages, held a 67-54 edge in shots. Ryan Steele, the AH Player of the Week, led the way with 2-2-4, while Todd Goehring added a pair of goals and a shootout tally. Neil Shea (1-4-5), Conner Hutchison (0-4-4) and Braeden Tuck (0-3-3) also had solid weekends, while Luke Lush stopped 48 shots. Shea ranks 16th in DI with 1.33 points per game, while Lush may have been responsible for the two conference points on Saturday with numerous breakaway stops. In Friday's game, the Pios erased a 3-1 deficit in the second period with three goals (Marcus Joughin, Dante Fantauzzi, Steele) in 21 seconds. Blake Humphrey, who ranks sixth nationally among rookies with 1.11 points per game, handed out two assists that night.

TIGERS
RIT is coming off a road sweep of AIC that included a pair of one-goal (4-3, 3-2) games against the defending conference champions. Grady Hobbs scored twice in the first win, while Tommy Scarfone made a combined 52 saves. The Tigers, who have a five-game win streak, are 5-0 at home.

MATCHUP
SHU and RIT enter the weekend fifth and sixth in goals per game nationally with 4.0 and 3.9, respectively. The Tigers are 23rd and the Pios 33rd in goals allowed per contest among DI schools (2.6 vs. 2.9). The guys from upstate NY have also had the stronger power play so far, converting 30.6 (5th in DI) compared to 23.3 (18th) for SHU.
