ERIE, Pa. – The Pioneers got their first 3-on-3 and shootout experience of the 2022-23 season today at Mercyhurst, and it was a good one.
Forward Todd Goehring, who scored early in the second period to tie the game at 1-1, got the decisive shootout goal to give the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Team two conference points after a 3-3 overtime tie today in Atlantic Hockey play.
The Pioneers allowed a 3-1 lead to slip away before heading to extra hockey and a wild finish that had all kinds of breakaways before Sacred Heart took the shootout 2-1.
Defensemen Hunter Sansbury and Julian Kislin had the other regulation tallies for the Pioneers, whose unbeaten streak is now at five games after the five-point weekend. Neil Shea and Braeden Tuck each had two assists.
Luke Lush, who made 28 saves between regulation and overtime, stopped four breakaways, including a 2-on-none in the OT. His final stop of the night came on the Lakers' final shootout attempt to extend the contest.
"Any time you can go on the road and get five of six points, you are happy," said SHU Head Coach C.J. Marottolo, who saw the home team score late in the third to send the game to OT. "I'm disappointed that we were a minute away from getting six points, but Mercyhurst had us on our heels the entire third period, but we learned a lot about our group this weekend, especially the character we have in our locker room. We look forward to preparing for RIT this week."
