FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team takes a quick day break before hitting the ice once again Tuesday against RIT as a make-up from January 2.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers are coming off of the second annual CT Ice Tournament in which they fell narrowly to #2 Quinnipiac 4-3 in overtime then defeating Yale the following day again in overtime by a score of 3-2 to claim the consolation round of the tournament.
Last Meeting... The Pioneers faced the Tigers earlier in the season on January 11 where they fell 3-2. RIT scored three goals in the first two periods then the Pioneers came close with a pair of goals in third off the sticks of Ryan Steele and Andrius Kulbis-Marino. The Tigers currently lead the series 28-15-2.
Scouting The Tigers... RIT is entering Tuesday's contest with a 12-10-3 overall record and 8-6-3 AHA record. They are coming off a series at Bentley on January 28 and 30 in which they won the opening game 3-1 and won the second game in a shootout 1-0. They continue to be led on offense by Will Calverley who leads the team with 11 goals. Colby Matthews still sits as the teams' top goalie with an overall record of 10-5-3, GAA of 3.34 and save percentage of .892.
Georgia on My Mind.... Senior Austin Magera has quite the interesting story on how he got recruited. Assistant coach Scott McDougall heard about him while on a scouting trip in Dallas, Texas. The day that McDougall got to see Magera play, he was ejected five minutes into the game for a major penalty but the video of games before then had Marottolo hooked on getting him to campus. Magera has been having a stellar senior season recording six goals, and 13 assists for a team leading 19 points.
Juniors Carrying the Team.... This year's junior class has been dominating the stat sheet as they carry 66 of the Pioneers 183 total points on the year. The 10 man class leads the team with 24 goals and 42 assists.
Goehring the Game-Winner.... For the second time in the history of the CT Ice Tournament, senior Todd Goehring scored the game-winning goal to either clinch the championship or take home third place. In Sunday's consolation match against Yale, Goehring scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 remaining in the overtime period. That was the first goal the senior scored since November 22 at Air Force.
Tuck for Hobey..... Junior forward Braeden Tuck, has been nominated for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award. Tuck is one of 77 nominees for the award, and one of nine from Atlantic Hockey. In its 41st year, the Hobey Baker Award is presented annually to the top NCAA Division I men's ice hockey player.
The team captain is third on the squad in points with 16 as he has accumulated a career-high nine goals and seven assists. Last season, he earned a spot on the Second-Team All-AHA. In his freshman season he was named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year and selected to the First-Team All-AHA for his incredible 23 assist, five goal season.
