Pioneers Travel to Mercyhurst for Two-Game Set Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn.
- The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey is back on the road this week to take on Mercyhurst for a pair of games beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Last Time Out... SHU is entering Friday's series with a 3-4-1 overall record and a 1-1-0 AHA record. The Pioneers are coming off a split series against Niagara as they fell to the Purple Eagles on October 29 4-1 while coming back the following day with a 3-1 victory. Sophomore John Jaworski scored his first career goal while first-year Hunter Sansbury tallied his first collegiate points with an assist. Ryan Steele's power-play goal in the third period was the game-winner and put Steele with goals in back-to-back games.

Last Meeting.....The Pioneers enter this week's series at Mercyhurst with Mercyhurst leading the series 15-7-2 but SHU has won the past two games against the Lakers including a massive 9-3 victory that came on January 11, 2020.

Scouting The Lakers.. Mercyhurst currently holds a 1-3-2 overall record and a 1-1-2 AHA record. Forward Carson Briere currently leads the association in points with nine as well as goals with seven. In net Hank Johnson currently is the top netminder with a 3.90 GAA and .883 save percentage. The team is coming off a tie and loss to RIT that came on October 29-30.

Britt the Top Defenseman..... Junior Logan Britt was the top defenseman in the Niagara series on October 29-30. Britt tallied a pair of assists alongside three blocks to earn himself Atlantic Hockey Defense Player of the Week. It's the second weekly honor for the Crystal Lake, Ill., native and the fourth by a Pioneer this season. Britt is currently on a three-game point streak as he recorded an assist in each of the last three matchups. He currently leads all AHA defensemen in points with seven on the year.

Faceoff Machine....Senior Austin Magera is dominating not just Atlantic Hockey but also the nation in faceoff wins as he has racked up 91 through just eight games this season. With the high amount he ranks tied for ninth in the NCAA in faceoff wins. Magera also ranks tied for second in points in Atlantic Hockey as well as tied for second in the association in assists with six.

Transfer Update....Heading into this week's series, the Pioneers seven transfers have made their mark on the program tallied 16 out of the teams 46 total points. The group has accumulated two goals and 14 assists. Meanwhile, Arizona State transfer Justin Robbins has been solid in net ranking third in Atlantic Hockey in goals against average and has already recorded career highs' in single games saves and tallied his first-career shutout that came against Maine on October 22.

New Point Makers.... In the Pioneers last series against Niagara, sophomore John Jaworski recorded his first career goal which aided SHU's 3-1 victory over the Purple Eagles on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile first-year Hunter Sansbury collected his first collegiate points with an assist in the victory as well.
