FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University football team came alive in the second half en route to a Northeast Conference victory over Central Connecticut State. The Pioneers outscored the Blue Devils, 24-10, in the final two quarters on their way to the 27-17 decision on Saturday.Â

Malik Grant. The junior backed up a career-day last week with 186 yards versus CCSU.

The Pioneers' defense was also opportunistic, forcing the Blue Devils into three turnovers which led to 14 points. Safety
Shamere Collins played a hand in two of the turnovers with a fumble recovery and interception.

Both teams were evenly matched with the Pioneers holding a 373-to-312 advantage in total yards thanks to 178 passing yards by quarterback
Marquez McCray.

The momentum swung the Pioneers' way late in the third quarter. Trailing 10-6, punter
Noah Gettman pinned the Blue Devils inside their own five-yard line. On first down, quarterback Romelo Williams dropped the ball and Bobby Whitehead scooped it up. One play later, Grant scored from four yards out.

SHU's defense stepped up to get the ball back on two-straight possessions. The first was a fourth-down stop that resulted in a 15-yard Grant score. On the first play of the very next drive Collins came through with the interception. Grant nearly scored from 50 yards out but came through one play.. later with his third score.Â

Sacred Heart was its own worst enemy in the opening half, committing costly turnovers and mistakes. Grant fumbled inside the CCSU 10-yard line on the opening drive then the Pioneers were stopped at the Blue Devil two-yard line on the ensuing drive.
