Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team suffered its third conference loss of the season, as the Pioneers fell to St. Francis Brooklyn (22-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-15, 13-15) on the road Friday evening.
Liisel Nelis led Sacred Heart (12-7, 5-3 NEC) with a double-double, registering a game-high 23 kills and 10 digs. Alix Polk recorded a double-double of her own with 12 digs and 10 kills. Sarah Ciszek added 50 assists and 13 digs in the loss.
First Set: St. Francis 25-22
- The two teams traded points to an early 10-10 tie
- The teams continued to trade points to a 13-13 tie
- St. Francis went on a 4-0 run to push its lead to 17-13
- SHU responded with a 8-5 run to cut the deficit to 22-21
- The Terriers took three of the next four points to secure the first set win
Second Set: SHU 25-23
- The two sides played to an 11-11 tie in the first set
- SHU pushed its lead to 14-11 after consecutive kills from Liisel Nelis, Julia Murawinski and Alix Polk.
- St. Francis cut the Pioneers' lead to 18-17
- With the set tied at 22-22, Nelis delivered a kill to give SHU a 23-22 lead
- After St. Francis tied the match at 23-23, Nelis scored the next two points with a kill and service ace to secure the set win for the Pioneers
Third Set: St. Francis 27-25
- St. Francis jumped out on a 6-1 run, before Murawinski halted it with a kill
- With SHU trailing 10-4, the Pioneers went on an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 13-12
- The run was capped by back-to-back kills from Nelis to force a timeout for the Terriers
- The teams went back-and-forth to a 23-23 tie
- Rianna McNamee gave SHU set-point, before the Terriers tied it again
- After St. Francis took a 25-24 lead, SHU called a timeout and right out of the timeout Nelis recorded a kill to tie the set
- St. Francis scored the next two points to take the set
Fourth Set: SHU 25-15
- SHU held an 8-7 lead over St. Francis early in the set
- With SHU leading 8-7, the Pioneers went on a 7-3 run to push its lead to 15-10 and forcing a timeout by the Terriers
- SHU earned set point after a block at the net from Gianna Scioletti and Murawinski
- The Pioneers clinched the set after a St. Francis attack error
Fifth Set: St. Francis 15-13
- SHU hopped out to a quick 2-0 lead after back-to-back kills from Murawinski and Nelis
- The two teams traded points to a 6-6 tie in the set
- SHU took a 7-6 lead after a Nelis kill
- With the set tied at 8-8, the Terriers recorded two straight points to take a 10-8 lead and force a timeout from the Pioneers
- With the Pioneers trailing 12-11, Nelis recorded a kill to tie the set and force a St. Francis timeout
- Out of the timeout, St. Francis recorded back-to-back kills to have match point
- McNamee kept the game alive with a kill to cut the SHU deficit to 14-13
- The Terriers recorded a kill to end the game, taking the match 3-2
SHU hit .243 for the match, while St. Francis Brooklyn (6-16, 2-3 NEC) had a hit percentage of 211. The Terriers registered 72 digs in the match, while SHU 65 recorded .
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when SHU travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on NEC-foe LIU Brooklyn at 6:00 p.m.
