Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – A 10-goal second half led the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over the Dartmouth Big Green Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field.
Joe Saggese led the Pioneers with four goals and five points on the day. Bryce Jurk added three goals and an assist. Kevin Cop and Brian Masi both had three points on two goals and an assist. Mike Calvagna won 14 of 25 faceoffs while also scoring a goal and assisting on another. Brooks Dutton made 12 saves in goal and scooped seven groundballs. Ryan O'Donoghue had a team-high three caused turnovers and had four groundballs.
Sacred Heart (2-1) used a 3-0 run in the span of 2:43 in the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Saggese scored twice, with Jurk's goal at the 5:46 mark putting the Pioneers up by two. Dartmouth (0-2) cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with 0:21 seconds left in the first on Wiley Osborne's second goal of the game. Calvagna put SHU ahead 4-2 to start the second quarter, winning the opening faceoff and going right down the field to score. Saggese scored his third goal of the game less than four minutes later, putting SHU up 5-2 with 10:57 left in the half. Dartmouth got back within two before halftime as a Jack Korzelius goal made the score 5-3.
The Pioneers came alive for five goals in the third quarter. Julian Garritano and Cop scored 10 seconds apart to give SHU a 7-3 lead with 11:34 left in the third. Masi then scored at the 10:17 mark with an assist from Max Tuttle. After the Big Green scored with 9:04 remaining in the third to put the score at 8-4, Garritano and Cop scored again to give the Pioneers a 10-5 advantage heading into the fourth. After Dartmouth scored twice to open the final quarter, SHU scored five straight goals in less than four minutes to take a commanding 15-6 lead. Jurk scored twice in the run as Tuttle, Saggese, and Masi each found the back of the net as well.
SHU outshot Dartmouth 43-39, including a 26-14 stretch in the second and third quarters. The Pioneers also held a 34-32 edge in groundballs. Sacred Heart was 2-for-9 on the extra-man and held the Big Green scoreless on six extra-man opportunities. Korzelius led Dartmouth with four goals as Osborne added three. George Christopher made 12 saves in goal.
The Pioneers return to Campus Field on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for a 3 p.m. game against Lafayette.
