Swimming & Diving Picks Up Two Wins In Home Opener

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team went 2-0 on Saturday, defeating Northeast Conference foe LIU Brooklyn 161-119 and Stony Brook 234-38. The Pioneers are 4-3 overall and 2-2 against NEC opposition

Margaret Flaherty and Emily Peter both set pool records for the Pioneers on the afternoon.  All told, five McCann Natatorium pool marks fell on Saturday. Flaherty won the 500 and 1,000-freestyle, while Lauren Somers capture the 100 and 200 freestyles. 

The Pioneers travel to Holy Cross for a November 4th dual meet.

Pool Records

  • Flaherty won the 1,000-freestyle with a time of 10:45.98
  • Peter's pool record came in the 100-butterfly at 59.38
  • LIU Brooklyn's Briana Vega set the pool mark in the 50-freestyle at 24.18 and was member of 400 freestyle team that touched at 3:41.61 for a new pool record
  • Blackbird Amanda Peren set the pool mark in the 200 IM at 2:13.71

Relays

  • SHU had the second and third fastest swims in the 200-medley relay, touching at 1:52.49 and 1:56.14
  • The Pioneers did the same in the 400-freestyle relay, with Kim Hylan, Peter, Flaherty and Somers combining for a second-place finish at 3:41.66

Diving

  • Nicole Pergoletti won both diving events with another season and lifetime best, 175.05, on the 1-meter board

Sprints

  • Somers cruised to the win in the 200-freestyle, touching at 1:55.09, six seconds in front of the runner-up
  • Lauren Spencer was third for the Pioneers at 2:01.86, with Shanna Haddow (2:04.92) and Sarah Hensal (2:07.39) following
  • Somers got her second win in the 100-freestyle with a swim of 53.35
  • Anna Brown's swim of 57.69 was the third fastest of the day, with Emily Shenk (58.22) and Alana Donabie (58.66)
  • Somers was second in the 50 free (24.37), while Peter placed fourth (25.34) and Victoria Catizone touched fifth (26.17)

Strokes

  • Fiona Maxwell earned the win in the 200-butterfly with a swim of 2:12.48
  • Jessie Poole won the 200-breaststroke with a swim of 2:30.09
  • Nikole Rudis was good for second place in the 200-fly at 2:16.74 and Meredith Bertoni was fifth at 2:22.76
  • Peter's win in the 100-fly paced a top-three sweep for SHU, with Maxwell second at 1:00.51 and Rudis third at 1:02.39
  • Maxwell was the runner-up in the 200 IM, with a swim of 2:15.75 and Poole was third at 2:19.18
  • Poole was second in the 100-breaststroke at 1:08.84
  • Hylan was the top finisher for SHU in the 200-backstroke at 2:14.47

Distance

  • Flaherty won the 1,000 at 10:45.98 and was the winner in the 500 at 5:16.98
  • Hylan touched third in the 1,000 at 11:11.22
  • Spencer was the runner-up in the 500
