Swimming & Diving Bests Fairfield For Second Straight Season

For the second straight season the Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team defeated crosstown rival Fairfield University in dual meet action.  The Pioneers won Saturday afternoon, 168-125, to improve to 7-1 in dual action this season.

The Pioneers closed the meet with a pool record swim in the 200 meet freestyle relay.  Caliegh Dion, Olivia Decas, Jill Crosby and Lauren Somers combined to touch at 1:50.60, snapping the eight-year old mark (1:52.15) by nearly two seconds.

Somers won three individual events on the afternoon, for a part in four total victories.  Kim Hylan had three wins on her docket Saturday as well.  The Pioneers swept the top four spots in the 100 backstroke and the top three spots in the 100 freestyle

The Pioneers travel to Monmouth on January 27 for a 4:30 p.m. match before returning home on Saturday, January 28 to host Central Connecticut State. The meet, at the McCann Natatorium, will begin at 11:30 a.m.

RELAYS

 

SPRINT FREESTYLE

  • Somers swept the individual sprint events on the afternoon, touching at 2:10.08 in the 200
  • Somers touched at 27.49 to capture the 50 free, .52 seconds in front of Crosby, who placed second
  • Somers led a sweep of the 100 freestyle, touching at 59.88, followed in second place by Diona (1:00.72) and Crosby (1:01.26) in third place

STROKES

  • Hylan paced the Pioneer effort in the 100 backstroke, touching at 1:06.75, and was closely followed by Brown, 1:06.87, in second place
  • Decas touched third at 1:09.97 in the 100 back, and Bryana Cielo had the fourth fastest swim at 1:10.93
  • Poole won the 100 breaststroke, by 1.5 seconds, finishing in a time of 1:17.58
  • Brown captured the 200 backstroke for SHU, at 2:28.56, with teammate Renee Russo in second place at 2:34.62
  • Cielo captured the 100 butterfly in a tight race, fishing at 1:09.23, .19 seconds in front of the runner-up from Fairfield

DISTANCE FREESTYLE

  • Hylan captured top honors in the 400 freestyle in 4:39.52, holding off a late surge
  • The Pioneers placed second, third and fourth in the 1,500 freestyle, with Lindsey Dell'Isolo, 19:07.93 leading the way
