Rugby Picks up Program's First 7's Win at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (March 26, 2016)—The Sacred Heart women's rugby team went 2-3 in the program's first ever 7's tournament at Harvard on Saturday. SHU picked up its inaugural 7's win over Navy 34-5, and followed it up with a 26-15 win over Endicott in the Plate semifinal.

"This was a great start [to the spring season] for us," said Head Coach Michelle Reed.

The Pioneers return to Campus Field for their only home action of the spring on April 3 when they host Molloy College at 1:00 p.m.

West Chester 25 – Sacred Heart 5

  • The Golden Rams struck first with a try, but Kaitlyn McNicholas evened the score at five with SHU's first try of the day. That was all the Pioneers would get, though, as WCU took the match 25-5

Quinnipiac 49 – Sacred Heart 5

  • The Bobcats jumped out to a big lead with eight straight tries before Colleen Semenick put SHU on the board
  • The Quinnipiac defense stifled the Pioneers' offense though holding them to five points

Sacred Heart 34 – Navy 5

  • This was the first 7's win in the program's young history
  • Semenick scored a try just 10 seconds into the game before Charlotte Tallman and Amanda McPhail each scored a try giving SHU a 15-0 lead
  • Sacred Heart continued to build on its lead, and Navy got on the board, with the Pioneers leading 24-5 at the half
  • Tallman and McPhail each scored again in the second half in the victory

Plate Semifinal: Sacred Heart 26 – Endicott 15

  • SHU carried over the momentum from its win over Navy, using it to take a 14-0 lead over the Gulls on two tries from Semenick and two good conversions from Emily Mignogni
  • Mignogni wasn't done there. The sophomore scored the first try of her Division I career, and nailed the conversion afterwards expanded SHU's lead to 19-0
  • A Tallman try finished scoring for the Pioneers, but Endicott got the final try of the game

Plate Final: New Hampshire 33 – Sacred Heart 5

  • The Wildcats got on the board first, but Sarah Rodzevik knotted the score at five with 2:07 remaining in the first half
  • Sacred Heart was held scoreless in the second half
