Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team moved to 1-1 on the 2016 season Tuesday after a 17-8 loss to the #20 Stony Brook Seawolves at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Junior midfield Bryce Jurk had a career-high three goals and four points. Julian Garritano added a pair of goals.
Stony Brook (1-0) got off to a fast start as Ryan Bitzer and Brody Eastwood each scored in the first minute to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. With the Seawolves up 3-0, Sacred Heart (1-0) got on the board with 8:44 left in the quarter when Matt Posch put a Joe Saggese pass past Stony Brook goalie Zach Oliveri to make the score 3-1. Eastwood scored twice more in the first to stake the Seawolves to a 5-1 lead.
The Seawolves scored four straight goals in the second period to extend its lead to 9-1 before Garritano scored to make the score 9-2 with 4:21 left until halftime. The Seawolves led 10-2 at the half after Mark Ellis scored with 1:31 remaining in the second quarter.
Stony Brook continued to pour it on in the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 4-2 to take a 14-4 lead. Sacred Heart, however, outscored the Seawolves 4-3 in the fourth quarter. Jurk, Garritano, and Spencer Hackett scored three straight goals in the final 2:25 to make the final score 17-8.
The Seawolves outshot the Pioneers 38-34 and held a 42-27 advantage in ground balls. Eastwood led all players with six goals and three assists.
Sacred Heart hosts Dartmouth for its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. at Campus Field.
FIRST QUARTER
- Stony Brook won the opening faceoff and scored four seconds into the game.
- Sacred Heart's first shot came with 11:11 to play as Brian Masi's shot was stopped by Zach Oliveri.
- Posch's goal was his first of the season. It was also Saggese's first assist of the season.
- SHU had seven shots in the quarter, with only two on goal.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Pioneers had five consecutive shots in the span of 0:41 early in the second, but couldn't score. Two were saved by Oliveri.
- Landon Kramer assisted on Garritano's goal for his first career point.
- A.J. Boyd had three saves in the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- Freshman goalie Greg Price made his collegiate debut, starting the second half.
- Jurk tied a career-high with two goals in the quarter.
- SHU had eight shots on goal in the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Freshman Danny Dowsett scored his first career goal with 10:28 to play in the game.
- Connor O'Reilly recorded his first career point with an assist on Jurk's third goal, which came at the 2:25 mark.
