FAIRFILED, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team was one point short of winning its home opener on Friday, dropping a 4-3 decision to Wagner in Northeast Conference action. The two teams split singles action after Wagner swept the doubles matches. The Pioneers are now 3-10 and 0-2 in NEC play. The Seahawks move to an even .500 at 9-9 and 1-2 in conference action.
Matt Dean won his team high tenth match at third singles, coming back from losing the first set 6-1 to win two straight tiebreaks. After winning the second set tiebreaker, he pulled away in the third set 10-6. Brian Power and Anthony Savio both were victorious in straight set fashion. Power defeat his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles, while Savio won his NEC opener in two tight sets at sixth singles, 6-4, 7-5.
Wagner clinched the doubles point with two 8-5 victories. Dean and partner Brian Power had their four match winning streak come to an end at first doubles, while Justin Pagan and Savio were also edged 8-5 at second doubles.
SHU will be off for the next week before returning to action at Stony Brook next Saturday at 2 pm
