LATHAM, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team was a three set tiebreak setback away from sweeping Siena on Saturday afternoon. After losing their first seven matches, the Pioneers are have won three of their past four and are now 3-8.
All five of Sacred Heart's victories in singles play came by way of straight sets. Cory Seltman won his third straight at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-4. Also winning in straight sets was Justin Pagan, Matt Dean, Karan Narula, and Anthony Savio. For Savio, it was his first dual victory of the year. SHU's lone setback came in three sets. Brian Power won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second 6-3. His competitor ultimately prevailed 10-5 in the tiebreak.
The two teams battled in doubles, with Sacred prevailing by winning two of the three matches. Power and Dean got it started with their third straight win, a comfortable 8-3 victory at first doubles. Savio and Pagan clinched the point with an 8-5 third doubles win. Narula and Francisco Del Valle Diaz fought hard in the Pioneers' lone loss, falling 8-6.
SHU will take part in a doubleheader with the women tomorrow against Holy Cross beginning at 1 pm. If the match is not able to take place at the Sacred Heart tennis courts, it will be relocated to Fairfield Warde High School. Stay tuned to SacredHeartPioneers.com for an announcement.
