SHU Extends Unbeaten Streak To Three Games, Beats Bentley 3-1

Box Score

MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to three games Saturday night, beating the Bentley Falcons 3-1 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Pioneers took three points out of a possible four against the Falcons this weekend.

Freshman Jake Lynes (Ellicott City, Md.) scored his first career goal in the game and added an assist. Chad Barthelmess (Norristown, Pa.) also had a goal and an assist, and was a +2 on the night along with the defensive pairing of Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, Pa.) and Will Rayner (Needham, Mass.). Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 29 saves for his second win in three games.

After the two sides combined for 12 goals Friday night, Sacred Heart (2-26-3, 2-19-3 AHA) and Bentley (12-16-3, 10-12-3) played a methodical, scoreless first period. The Falcons outshot the Pioneers 13-10 in the opening period, but could not score on two power play opportunities. In the second period, Sacred Heart outshot Bentley 10-8 and got on the scoreboard 11:12 into the frame. Barthelmess knocked in a rebound of an Eric Delong (Oakville, Man.) shot to put the Pioneers in the lead 1-0. Lynes then put Sacred Heart ahead 2-0 3:16 seconds later. The freshman finished off a breakaway with Barthelmess and Tommy Castonguay (Rimouski, Quebec) for the eventual game-winning tally.

Bentley, however, would not go away after trailing 2-0 after two periods. Joe Campanelli scored the Falcons' lone goal 2:29 into the final period, getting assists from Alex Kubiak and Matt Maher to make the score 2-1. Less than three minutes later, Chad Filteau (Regina, Sask.) put Sacred Heart ahead 3-1 with his eighth goal of the season that was assisted by Lynes. The Pioneers fought off two penalties late in the third period to ensure their second win in the last three games.

Sacred Heart outshot Bentley 32-30 for the game and 22-17 in the final two periods. The Falcons were 0-for-5 on the power play with eight shots on goal, as the Pioneers were 0-for-4 with nine shots on goal.

The Pioneers are back in action on Monday, Feb. 25 with a 7 p.m. game at Holy Cross. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26 but moved to Monday.
