EMMITSBURG, MD (March 19, 2011) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team earned their first Northeast Conference victory of the spring, winning on the road at Mount St. Mary's 6-1. The Pioneers knotted their dual match record at 5-5 overall.
The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches to take the point led by seniors Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) and Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) at #1. The duo beat Taylor Place and Matt Blake, 9-7 (7-4).
At #2 doubles the team of seniors Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) and Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) earned an 8-3 win over Mike Salomon and Mike Zabetakis. The team of Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) and Jake Miller (West Chesterfield, NH) also earned an 8-3 win at #3 doubles over Patrick Plastow and Andrew Marinucci.
In singles play, Kasyanov won the first set against Blake, 6-1 and was leading 1-0 in the second when Blake was forced to retire. Mazzarese won 6-1 and 7-6 at second singles over Salomon. Kasyanov picked up his eighth-straight win while Mazzarese earned his sixth straight victory this spring.
Conrad posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Place at #4 and Sullo rebounded with 6-0, 6-0 sets after dropping the first to Plastow at #5. Miller closed out the singles wins with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Marinucci.
SHU continues their road trip Sunday afternoon with a stop at Villanova.
