Men's Basketball Loses Tight Game at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT - Junior DeMario Anderson poured in 31 points, while Adam Gonzalez added 21 to help the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team escape with a 79-75 win over Sacred Heart Thursday night.

Sacred Heart, 11-12 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast Conference, trailed by as much as nine early in the first half, but crawled back into the game and were down just 38-36 at the intermission.

Quinnipiac, 11-11 overall and 9-4 in the NEC, extended the lead to 42-36 at the start of the second half on a Chris Wehye bucket.

Senior Jarrid Frye gave the Pioneers the lead at 48-46 with a layup with 13:44 left in the game and a see-saw battle ensued for the rest of the half.

Gonzalez gave the Bobcats a 73-70 lead with a layup with 3:21 remaining, but a pair of free throws from junior Brice Brooks cut it to one with 3:03 left. After an Anderson missed three, Brooks converted again for the Pioneers, giving his team a 74-73 edge with 1:56 on the clock.

Anderson nailed a jumper with 1:28 to go gave the Bobcats the lead back and, after a missed Pioneer three, Gonzalez was fouled and sank both free throws to put his team up 77-74.

Frye was fouled going to the basket for SHU with :23 left and made just one of two free throws. Anderson was again fouled on the inbound pass and converted just one of his tries to keep the QU lead at three.

Luke Granato missed a three for the Pioneers with :12 left and Quinnipiac freshman guard Casey Cosgrove was fouled on the rebound. He missed both free throws to keep the Pioneer hopes alive. Shubik raced the other way with the rebound, and Frye launched a three with :03 left but it fell short to dash the Pioneer comeback attempt.

Brooks finished with a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Frye added 18 points for the Pioneers.
