SHU Loses a Pair of Five Game Matches at Providence Tournament

The Sacred Heart volleyball team lost twice in five games Saturday afternoon at the Providence College Tournament. The Pioneers fall to 2-7 on the year with the pair of setbacks.

SHU fell behind Gardner-Webb 2-0 after the Bulldogs posted wins of 30-27 and 30-25. SHU battled back in games three and four with wins of 30-28 and 30-27 but came up short in the deciding fifth, 15-4. Against the host Friars, the Pioneers lost the first game, 30-22, but took games two and three, 30-23 and 30-19, before falling in games four, 30-27, and five, 15-9.

The Pioneers had four players in double digits for kills against Gardner-Webb led by sophomore Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) and senior Heather Brooks (Regina, SK) who each posted 20 kills. Duffy also added 21 digs as well as serving three aces. Brooks had four assists and four total blocks.

Senior Brenda Bailey (Costa Mesa, CA) added 15 kills and 14 digs while junior Charnette Porter (Framingham, MA) had 11 kills. Senior Michelle Clarke (Baltimore, MD) passed out 60 assists in running the office and also excelled defensively with 20 digs.

In the final game of the tournament, Bailey racked up another double double effort with 18 kills and 16 digs while Porter rang up 12 kills of her own. Junior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS) finished with 15 kills and 17 digs. Clarke was again a key cog on offense with 45 assists and on defense with 26 digs. Freshman Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) added 23 digs from her libero position.

The Pioneers return home next weekend to host their own tournament with Rider, St. Peter's and Maryland-Eastern Shore paying a visit to the William H. Pitt Center.
