Men's Ice Hockey Skates to 4-4 Tie With Connecticut

MILFORD, CT (February 24, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Connecticut on Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Tim Olsen tied the game with 6-seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra period.

The Pioneers opened the scoring when freshman Charles Veilleux (Quebec, QC) netted the first goal of his collegiate career at 6:31 of the first period. Fellow freshman Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) and senior Mike Reagan (Flin Flon, AB) assisted on the goal.

The Huskies tied the game in the closing minute of the opening period when Jarrett Scarpaci scored with 23-sdeconds remaining in the opening frame.

UConn took their first lead of the contest at 8:38 of the second period on Olsen's first goal of the game from Chris Uber on a shot from the point that goaltender Kevin LaPointe (Quebec, QC) was screened on.

The Pioneers tied the game moments later on a power play goal from junior Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) with the assists credited to sophomore Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) and Reagan.

UConn quickly regained the lead with a power play goal of their own from team captain Eric Nelson at the 15-minute mark of the second period.

SHU answered just 44-seconds later when Reagan tallied his 10thg goal of the season tying the game at 3-3 with 4:16 remaining in the second period.

The Pioneers regained the lead 1:15 into the third period when senior captain Chuck Metcalfe (Edmonton, AB) netted his second goal of the season from junior Noel Henck (Long Beach, NY).

It remained a 4-3 game until the final seconds of regulation when Olsen netted his second goal of the game to tie that game at 4-4 and send it into overtime.

Sacred Heart appeared to win the game when sophomore Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) beat UConn goaltender Scott Tomes, but the buzzer sounded to end the game just before the puck went into the net.

Lapointe made 31 saves in the game for the Pioneers while Tomes made 16 saves for the Huskies.

Sacred Heart will be back in action on Saturday night, February 28th, when they travel to Army for a 7:00 pm game.
