NORTHFORD, CT (February 1, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team was defeated by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Quinnipiac University, 5-3. Junior Chuck Metcalfe (Edmonton, AB) led the Pioneers with three assists.

Freshman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead from Metcalfe. Senior Richard Naumann (Boerne, TX) netted his second of the season at 3:20 from Metcalfe and sophomore Barclay Folk (Westbank, BC) to increase the lead to 2-0 heading into the second period.

Quinnipiac got on the board at 14:53 in the second period with a power play goal by Matt Erhart. Bobcat Craig Falite closed out the second period scoring at 17:45 with a second power play goal, leaving the score tied a two.

Quinnipiac's Michael Bordieri opened the third period at 4:39. Folk put a third on the board for the Pioneers at 6:00 from Chmiel and Metcalfe. At 10:23 Matt Craig put the Bobcats ahead for good from Ryan Morton, who closed out the scoring at 16:55.

Senior Eddy Ferhi (Charenton, France) made 43 saves in the loss, while Bobcat goaltender Jamie Holden made 30 saves.

The Pioneers return to action Friday, February 8th, as they play host to Mercyhurst College at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7 pm.
